For many, Yusuf Islam is known as Cat Stevens. This rock legend entertained millions with his rock stylings in the 1960s, but in the late 60s he had a near-death experience, which changed him for life. He soon converted to Islam, and in 1979, disappeared from the world of music, not to return for almost 30 years.
Yusuf Islam has a site devoted to him, his message, and his ways, yusufislam.com The site begins with a picture of the man at a coffee table, guitar nearby. It gives readers news of Yusuf and other topics related to him, with the four main links at the top- Sing, Think, Give, and Bazaar.
Sing opens up into a cartoon living room, while very lively music by none other than Mr. Islam plays in the background. Nearly every piece of furniture and item in the room leads to some link, like a picture leading to Yusuf’s biography, the television leading to videos, or the newspaper leading back to the news. There is a coffee cup in the center of the screen that can take readers back home, where they can check out the other links.
Think opens a new window, http://www.mountainoflight.co.uk/ Which is an Islamic site that Yusuf Islam subscribes to. In it, you can find many albums by other people like Yusuf, who are Islamic singers. It also talks about charities you can give to that would benefit Islamic people, and many other items of information, like news, or just general information on what the site is about.
Give leads to another new window, http://www.smallkindness.org/ a charity run by Yusuf Islam himself. It details what the charity is about, who benefits from it, and the areas it helps. It is all layed out in a very simple, clear way, that should ensure no one gets lost.
The final link, Bazaar, is unavailable at this point, but will most likely be a place where members of the site can go to talk with one another, purchase albums by Yusuf Islam and other musicians, and generally hang out.
It is quite a transformation for this rocker to turn out how he did, but his music remains the same as ever, and he is still the same person, one that is deeply concerned with cultures and other areas of concern that generally don’t get enough attention.
